Flinton Street, Paddington Sydney NSW Australia

Background:

A young family, George, Anne and son Timothy reside in a 2 level terrace at 32 Flinton Street, Paddington NSW.

The home was poorly lit and not very functional because of its dated layout.

Client Brief/Requirements:

  • George, a film director, requires a cinema for viewing films with up to 8 people. He is also a keen photographer.

  • Anne, a freelance author, requires an area in the kitchen, dining or lounge for her laptop.

  • George and Anne require a large master suite.

  • Tim, the 12-year-old son is into basketball and sports and requires an area to shoot hoops with Dad.

  • en-suites and custom joinery for the two bedrooms

  • a yard for yoga, family barbecues and entertaining.

  • joinery in the living and dining rooms to display art for when their collection expands, as well as a combination of wall and shelf space for hanging and display.

  • better flow from entry to shared areas.

  • privacy on the first level.

Concept:

This design focuses on the ease of flow within the 2 level interior to provide a better connection, with the new layout providing more space and abundant light.

The materiality was chosen for sustainability, durability and practicality for a growing family. Custom joinery was carefully designed to provide wall and shelf space for the family's growing collection of artworks.

The placement of the staircase was not ideal, so it was redesigned and moved to fit the new flow from the ground to the first level. Adding glass windows and skylights in specific areas welcomes the natural sunlight within. It is a unique combination of old and new, opting for quality which will have lasting value.
